⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Kija
Age: 20
Canon: Akatsuki no Yona
Canon Point: Chapter 63

Background: Here

Personality:
Above all four dragons of legend within the series, Kija (Hakuryuu), is one of the most dutiful. He takes his position as a dragon very seriously, with a steadfast eagerness. He accepts fully what he is, and was raised to believe that it is an honor to be a dragon. While some of the other dragons were ignorant to what they truly were or rejected it entirely, Kija had been raised with the knowledge of Hakuryuu and what he was, and fully embraced it. He is dedicated to what he was born to and thus to Yona (who he sees as the King Hiryuu of legend that he is meant to serve) and would follow her to the ends of the Earth. He is incredibly loyal to her, his comrades, family and friends.

Kija is not the type to take what he has for granted. He realizes that there have been many within his bloodline and tribe who never had the chance to serve their red king. Instead, by accepting it he takes onto his shoulders the loss and frustration of all the previous Hakuryuu’s before him who died without having been able to serve their purpose. In fact, he can become frustrated and stubborn on his views, even angry with the other dragons when they don’t initially share his same, enthusiastic views of dedication and duty. He’s very passionate about it, sometimes to the great annoyance of his friends. Often he tries to chastise and lecture them for not holding the right amount of reverence for their position or Yona, which he feels is a sacred position and entity.

While he has been loved within his village, Kija is not completely removed from some of the darker aspects that come along with being born as the White Dragon. His father had been the previous Hakuryuu, and scarred Kija out of upset and frustration. Despite this Kija is not the type to linger on the past. He knows it is impossible to change what happened back then, and finds no use in allowing it to weigh him down. On the contrary, with acceptance, he considers it a mark of the passion felt by the Hakuryuu, and how desperate he was to want to meet and serve his true master. He shows incredible resolve and is able to move past things with a positive attitude. He has a very optimistic personality.

Pampered from the time he had been born, Kija is much like Yona, stepping out into the world for the first time. His entire life he has been sheltered, which makes him incredibly inexperienced, with no knowledge of how things work outside of his village. Overtime he has learned more and gotten better, but he still struggles with living a rough life outdoors. Until leaving with his companions he had never slept outside, had to contend with bugs (which is he terrified of) or had to rough it. His companions like to tease and rile him up due to this, and in fact he is incredibly gullible, often falling for the things Hak or the other dragons tell him.

The gullibility and his inexperience makes him sometimes angry with and jealous of his friends. He can be very competitive, vias for attention and has a deep desire to be useful and needed. In a way he can be childish and petulant. He loves praise, and always seeks to be an asset to the group, in particular to Yona. Due to striving to do his best, Hak is often considered a rival to him, constantly trying to out do him- an individual who is not one of the dragons. Despite this it’s more of a friendly rivalry than anything despite arguing. He does come to appreciate and care for Hak, too.

Due to having a very good upbringing, Kija is incredibly polite and proper. Despite that though, he can be incredibly clumsy, and again- often his inexperience leads to naivety. He has his graceful moments, and much prefers to keep himself clean and presentable. In actuality he’s a big airhead and nerd. Bugs utterly terrify him, and he’ll go far out of his way to avoid one, even forgo taking a warm bath if he knows there could be one in the vicinity. It makes sleeping outside restless and keeps him constantly on guard, despite having to grow used to it to an extent. He often falls, trips, or walks into things accidentally without thinking much, and can make common sense mistakes. Especially due to his inexperience with the wilds and gathering food. Due to fearing he’ll hurt himself, Yoon (a companion) even demands that he walk ‘at the back of the line’, when traveling in the beginning.

Kija’s shortcomings frustrate him. He tries his best to make up for them and helps with camp, is quick to take direction and is eager to please and help. He doesn’t mind learning new things and does what he can to improve and offer his skills. In a way, he feels similar to the princess. Both struggling to become stronger and not slow the others down. He does all he can to protect her, and self proclaims himself as a ‘big brother’ to another one of the dragons, planning to impart all he knows to him.

‘Pure’ is often used to describe Kija. Especially when it comes to women, sex, and lets face it, anything over PG13. Even Yoon, the youngest in their group, seems more capable of dealing with these subjects, and a little more relationship aware (although Shin-ah takes the cake in the purity department). He easily becomes flustered around women, especially forward women, who are unabashed with their sexuality. Proper, anything that he thinks might be inappropriate sets him blushing and stammering. Especially in regards to Yona. Getting a compliment from her sets his cheeks on fire, let alone accidentally walking in on her in what he deems as a revealing state. It’s clear he has something like a crush on her, but doesn’t understand it, nor would he ever act on it. Part of it might have to do with his dragon blood calling for her. He seems perfectly content in remaining her servant, and thus far has shown no interest in other women, even despite the many marriage proposals his grandmother has set him up with.

Overall, Kija is caring and worries over all of his companions. He is silly, but determined with a good heart and a caring personality. He accepts the differences within people and what makes them unique, and is loyal to his friends, and hard working. He easily becomes upset if the thinks he might be the cause of someone else’s duress, and is incredibly empathetic toward others. He wears his heart and emotions on his sleeves, and is both trustworthy and honest.

Abilities:

Dragon Claw- Kija possesses the power of the White Dragon within his right hand. It has white scales, even when at rest, with semi long claws. However when he calls upon the powers of Hakuryuu, his hand can expand many times it’s normal size, if not the same height as his body. He uses it as a weapon to defend himself and his companions. In addition to this, it allows him to carry things ten times the normal strength of a man. He can climb, scale buildings, and swing around when needed by it. And at times, his claw can be used in place of shovels and other tools if needed. He considers it sacred and takes good care of his right hand.

Dragon Sense- Kija can sense the direction of the other dragons, and even tell which is which. In the past he’s become motion sick and a little ill, however, if following one of them by presence, and they move around too much or too quickly. If something is overly wrong with one of the dragons (such as with drugs) their presence can become strange too.

Lastly, each new generation of Hakuryuu has been haunted by the previous generations that became vengeful spirits. Kija is completely unaware of it, but he unconsciously tamed the vengeful spirits that haunt him. Due to having an exceptionally strong will power and sense of self, he’s never once noticed them, despite taking on their regrets and burdens. Due to his strength of heart, the spirits protect him and is he unable to be possessed by other spirits of ghosts.

Alignment:

I’m choosing to place Kija within Piphron. While Kija is incredibly emotional and I felt swayed toward Sosyne due how he is quick to anger and yet can be super serious, I don’t feel that defines him as well. Particularly because he can be incredibly positive, and have a very bright outlook on life in general. He’s a walking reaction gif. But more than those things, I believe Kija is guided by his faith. He’s loyal to a fault and would never dream of betraying the princess. He cherishes his role as a Dragon Warrior, respects the legend, and is one hundred and ten percent satisfied with his company and role.

He belongs to the Happy Hungry Bunch and he would be more likely to remove his own arm than to bring harm to his friends. He tries to get them to call him brother and to depend on him. Likewise, he knows in a battle or fight that he can trust the princess with them, or that they will have his back. It’s not something he ever questions. For that reason, I feel that Piphron is the best fit for him.
